The capital Delhi, an active city, with an ideal combination of the old and the contemporary era. Delhi consists of two visible parts: New Delhi, the city created by the British as the royal capital of India in 1911. Old Delhi which was considered the Muslim capital of India between the 17th and 19th centuries. There are at least eight cities on the site of modern Delhi, including Indraprastha one of the first recognized settlements, which was emphasized more than 3000 years ago in the epic Mahabharata. Nevertheless, Delhi has always been one of the most important cities in the northern region of the subcontinent.
After a relaxing breakfast, the guide will pick you up at the hotel and take you for a tour of Old and New Delhi. This tour includes the following places: Red Fort (photo moment), Jama Masjid, Chandni Chowk, Raj Ghat, Rashtrapati Bhavan (photo moment), Humayun's Tomb, Qutub Minar, India Gate (photo moment).
Red Fort (drive by only): The term Red Fort comes from the Hindi word Lal, meaning red, and Quila, meaning fort. The structure of the Red Fort is very irregular and it is placed in an octet shape along the Yamuna River. This fort is bordered by a wall with a perimeter of about 2.4 km and is made of red sandstone. In 1638, Shah Jahan began construction of this massive fort and it was completed in 1648. The fort has a Diwan-e-Am (hall for public audience), a Rang Mahal (a water-cooled apartment of royal ladies), and a Pearl Mosque, built with white marble. The Red Fort has two gates: a) The Delhi Gate and b) The Lahori Gate, and both gates overlook the famous Chandni Chowk.
Jama Masjid: Jama Masjid is one of the country's largest mosques where hundreds and thousands of Muslims offer their prayers even today. Jama Masjid was built in 1658 by Shah Jahan as an architectural spectacle. The wonders of construction in Jama Masjid can be seen in the long stairs and the large courtyard.
Chandni Chowk (Silver Street): Chandni Chowk is known for its flamboyant streets with Old Delhi's famous shopping spots. It also has the country's most famous extensive market for textiles, electronics, and watches. The entire Chandni Chowk was designed by Jahanara Begum, the beloved daughter of Shah Jahan, and was subsequently populated by the wealthy families of that time. The famous Parantha wale Gali, known for its delicious paranthas, is also located in Chandni Chowk. The famous gold market, Dariba Kalan, is also located here.
Raj Ghat: An elementary square platform of black marble on the banks of the Yamuna River symbolizes the spot where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated, following his assassination in 1948. Every Friday, an inauguration ritual takes place in his memory.
India Gate (drive by only): India Gate is a free-standing, 42-meter high arch. It was built in 1931 and was formerly called the All-India War Memorial, in memory of the 90,000 soldiers of the Indian Army who died in World War I. The names of the warriors are engraved along the walls of the arch everywhere. The eternal flame was lit here in 1971 in honor of the Amar Jawan (immortal soldier).
Rashtrapati Bhavan (President's House) (drive by only): Rashtrapati Bhavan is the official residence of the country's president. It was designed by Lutyens and was the official residence of the Viceroy when the British ruled India.
Humayun's Tomb: Nine years after Humayun's death, Haji Begum (Humayun's widow) built this tomb in 1565-66 in his memory.
Qutub Minar: This remarkable building in the southern part of the capital was built by the Muslim king Qutab-ud-din Aibak in 1199 AD. The Minar (tower) is 72.5 meters high and the base is a mosque.
